Bhopal : The entire opposition comprising mainly the Congress in the Madhya Pradesh assembly staged a walkout following uproarious scenes here Monday over the alleged poor quality of bicycles distributed amongst female students.
Leader of Opposition Jamuna Devi and legislator Indrajeet Kumar (both from the Congress) alleged cycles distributed in 15 districts were faulty.
Explanations from state Education Minister Gauri Shankar Shejwar citing that probes to look into the complaints were underway despite the cycles’ having passed tests by committees functioning under the auspices of the Madhya Pradesh Small Industries Development Corporation (MPSIDC) and supervised by district collectors did not satisfy the angry opposition.
A statement by Shejwar indicating that payments to suppliers of cycles had been withheld only irked the opposition further.
Devi charged the government with paying contractors who assembled substandard completely knocked down (CKD) cycle kits imported from China at outrageous prices before leading the walkout.
