Kozhikode : Six kilograms of opium worth about Rs.10 million has been seized from a person at a beach here, the police here said Monday.
Abdul Khader, 50, of Pandikkad in Malappuram district was arrested at the Kozhikode south beach Sunday evening and six kg of opium was recovered from him, a police official said.
“The seizure was made following a tip off. Four kg of the contraband was recovered from his person while two kg was recovered from his Qualis van,” A.J. Babu, police circle inspector, told IANS.
“Abdul Khader is a ‘wholesale dealer’ in narcotic drugs and has been in the business for the last 35 years,” Babu said.
According to the police, Khader told them that he sourced the narcotic drugs from Dongri in Mumbai.
“As per the information provided by him, opium is available at Rs.75,000 per kg in Mumbai. He sells it here for Rs.100,000. The value of opium in the international market is estimated between Rs.1 million and Rs.2 million per kg, depending on quality,” the official said.
This is the second major seizure of narcotic drugs in the city in the last one week. On Feb 27, police had seized 520 gm of brown sugar, valued in millions in the international market.
