Paris : French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said on Tuesday his country rejects Ukraine and Georgia’s entry to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
In statements to France Inter raido station, a few hours before the NATO summit in Bucharest begins, Fillon held that the Paris position in this respect favors power balance in Europe.
“We oppose Georgia and Ukraine’s entry into NATO, because we think it is not the best answer to the balance of power relations in Europe and between Europe and Russia,” the French conservative head of government explained.
This way France distanced itself from the US point of view, which favors both States’ entry, which was ratified on Monday by President George W. Bush.
“We have a different position from Washington,” Fillon stated.
Russia opposed the entry of the former Soviet republics into NATO, and particularly warned that it would unleash a serious crisis between Kiev and Moscow.
