Xining (China) : Ten climbers scaled the 6,178-meter-high Yuzhu Peak in northwest China Wednesday morning to mark the 100-day countdown for the Beijing Olympics.
Yuzhu is the highest peak of the Kunlun mountain range in Qinghai province, where the precious Kunlun jade were produced to make the Beijing Olympic medals.
The ten amateur climbers participated in the 2008 Yuzhu Peak Climbing Festival, said Li Weidong, who is in charge of the event.
The team which scaled the Yuzhu in a seven-hour assault included three women members, Li said.
Yuzhu is regarded as the best place for mountaineering beginners as its route is less arduous.
China Mountaineering Association began organizing the climbing festival in 2001 and the peak has become an important training base for novices.
Yuzhu is located about 10 km east of the Kunlun Pass and 160 km from Golmud, an industrial city along the Qinghai-Tibet railway.
