Nepal Assembly to Have 161 Women

Kathmandu : The future Constituent Assembly that will abolish the monarchy and declare Nepal a federal and democratic republic will have 161 women, the Electoral Commission (EC) reported Saturday.

That figure is 26.7 percent of 601 members distributed among 25 parties, led by the Maoist Communist Party of Nepal with 220 deputies.

Following is the Nepali Congress with 107, the Unified Marxist-Leninist Communist Party of Nepal, 100, and the Madhesi Jana Adhikar Forum, 44.

All these groups presented to the EC their respective nominations to occupy 335 seats distributed by the proportional representation system, according to the total counting of votes received in the April 10 elections.

EC assistant secretary Raju Man Singh Malla stated that the panel will review lists to find out whether parties fulfill legal requirements and quotas agreed by gender and representative of communities, ethnics and regions.
