Baghdad : Insurgents killed 11 Iraqi Army soldiers in an ambush near the northern city of Mosul, police sources reported on Tuesday.
The soldiers were taking part in a large scale offensive launched in that area by US and Iraqi troops when the resistance attacked their vehicle.
The ambush was staged near Baaj locality, in Ninive province, and according to the media it was one of the deadliest attacks against the armed forces in the last few weeks.
According to the military, about 1,300 alleged members of the resistance have been arrested.
Two Iraqi officials on condition of anonymity said that nine bodies, including the driver, were found inside the vehicle and two others on the ground.
US and Iraqi soldiers are taking part in fierce joint operations in the southern and northern parts of the Arab country in a bid to wipe out the resistance and control those regions.
