Dubai : The glitzy Gulf emirate of Dubai has unveiled a plan to build the world’s largest airport, which will be the size of 19,200 football pitches or the equivalent of Chicago and London Heathrow airports combined, a report from the UAE said Wednesday.
The Dubai World Central airport, at Jebel Ali, aims to handle 120 million passengers a year, Bob Johnson, the chief executive officer of Dubai Aerospace, was quoted by the Khaleej Times as saying.
He told industry experts at the Dubai Airports and Dubai Duty Free Suppliers Forum Tuesday that Dubai World Central would be the airport of the future, offering less bureaucracy and inspection procedures for passengers.
“They’ve (airports) evolved to places where you get on a plane to a place where you and your bags are inspected,” Johnson said.
“I think while we can make it safe, we can also make it quicker. The aim should be from kerbside to planeside in 15 minutes,” the company official explained.
The mega airport will be opened in 2009, according to airport officials.
