Ponting sees in Casson a strong prospect

By IANS,

Melbourne : Australian skipper Ricky Ponting is pinning his spin hopes on debutant Beau Casson for the series against India and says playing in the third Test against West Indies will stand the left-arm spinner in good stead.

“Certainly there is a case for choosing Beau. With our next Test series in India during October it would be nice for him to get international experience. Even Shane Warne found India a difficult place to bowl spin against batsmen who are brought up on a diet of slow bowling,” Ponting wrote in his column in The Australian.

Ponting was all praise for Casson and said the 25-year-old is showing rapid progress with each day.

“I have always made it clear that I like having a front-line spinner in the side but in the end the selectors will need to weigh up picking the best team to win the third Test and the series here,” he said.

“It has been great watching Beau’s confidence grow just being a member of the touring squad. His bowling in the nets has got better and better.
