Larijani calls for new initiative on nuclear talks

By NNN-IRNA,

Tehran : Majlis speaker Ali Larijani on Sunday put forward a new initiative for nuclear talks with the European Union.

He told the parliament’s formal session that the former models must be replaced by a new methodology to get positive results, but, he did not elaborate on his initiative.

Larijani, the former nuclear negotiator, called on his successor and the Group 5 1 to find a third method which would benefit both sides.

Larijani made the remarks criticizing recent propaganda fuss made after the July 19 meeting between Iran’s top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili and the European Union foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, in Geneva, Switzerland.

The US Undersecretary of State William Burns, the third-highest US diplomat, was also present in the Geneva meeting in a major shift of policy on the part of the US.

Western media claimed after the meeting that Iran was given a two-week deadline to answer some questions about its peaceful nuclear activities.

“There is no logical relations between what has happened in Geneva, the content of Jalili-Solana talks and the propaganda fuss made after the meeting,” Larijani said.

The speaker added, “In brief, what has happened in Geneva was that the G5 1 presented a nonpaper to Iran in an unofficial way and Iran, in turn, offered its own nonpaper to the group. There are many common points in the two models.

They were briefly discussed during the Geneva meeting but more talks were still needed to discuss them later.

“Making a propaganda fuss after the meeting indicated that the US still believes in the theory of anarchy.”
