The President signed the bill in the presence of a large number of women hailing from different sections of the society.

Three women to manage Pennagaram bypoll

Uttar Pradesh tops in crimes against women: minister

By IANS, New Delhi : The national capital is second only to Uttar Pradesh in crime against women cases, Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury informed the Lok Sabha Friday. Renuka Chowdhury, citing data provided by the National Commission for Women (NCW), said the total number of such cases in Delhi in 2008 stood at 724. The NCW put the total number of cases, including rape, torture for dowry and harassment against women, in Uttar Pradesh at 2,381. It is the highest in the country in 2008.

More women joined politics in 2008, says a global report

United Nations, March 6 (Prensa Latina) The 143-member Inter-Parliamentarian Union Thursday said the number of women occupying seats in the legislative institutions worldwide reached record levels in 2008, with one out of every five elected members was woman. The Women in Parliament 2008 report released by the union said of the 12,879 seats in 66 parliaments in 54 countries last year, women occupied 2,656 seats, or 20.6 percent. In the past five years, 60 percent of the women legislators were re-elected, the report said.

The victim, who went missing Feb 13 this year, was last seen with Paswan, the witnesses told the court.

Women disadvantaged in dual-income households

By IANS, Washington : Women are still disadvantaged when it comes to dual income households, says a study. Youngjoo Cha, a Cornell University doctoral candidate in sociology, finds that having a husband who works 50 hours or more per week can hurt women's careers. Women have less time available to do paid work because they still are expected to do more housework and perform most of the caregiving responsibilities, Cha's work looked at 8,484 professional workers and 17,648 non-professional workers from dual-earner families, using data collected by the US Census Bureau.

Woman raped, minor girl molested in capital

By IANS, New Delhi: A woman was allegedly raped after falling unconscious and a six-year-old girl was molested in two separate incidents of sex crimes in the capital, police said Friday. "A 24-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by Syed Saamir Ali, 28, resident of Bulandshahr, March 28. Ali and the woman had met at a mobile repairing shop in Nehru Pace a few days earlier and had become friends," a police official said. Ali had served the woman cold drinks laced with sedative March 28 and raped her when she became unconscious.

Kashmir council no place for bill limiting women’s rights: Chair

"The bill cannot be discussed in this house," he said. "The legislative assembly is the appropriate forum to table the bill, not the council," Singh said giving a ruling over the bill tabled by Peoples Democratic Party's legislator Murtaza Khan on March 8.

But the participation by both men and women MPs was higher that the previous session, according to an analysis done by PRS Legislative Research, an independent think tank that tracks the functioning of parliament. The 32-day budget session concluded Friday after it began Feb 22 with a month-long recess.

Iran to produce special car for women

By NNN-FNA, Tehran : Iran Khodro, the Middle-East's No. 1 car manufacturer, has unveiled a car specifically designed for women, with electronic parking sensors and a special jack making it easier to change a flat tire. A study looking at 110 groups worldwide found that women, working in evenly matched groups, were more likely to be harassed than women in predominantly male or female groups. Haryana to spread hygiene among rural women

By IANS, Chandigarh : In order to spread health and hygiene among the rural women of the state, the Haryana government has decided to provide them with sanitary napkins at a price of Re.1 each. Manufactured under the brand name Mukti by the Haryana Women Development Corporation, each sanitary napkin would cost Rs.2 but the state's health department will subsidize half the cost. Haryana's Women and Child Development and Health Minister Kartar Devi said Wednesday that the focus of the campaign was to make sanitary napkins available easily to rural women throughout the state.

Men too have joined the bandwagon - so much so that a majority of them prefer to discard their spectacles and wear contact lenses instead. A survey by American eye care brand Bausch & Lomb reveals that 82 percent of men say they would opt for contact lenses on their wedding day. The survey, carried out in association with market research company ACNielsen, was a quantitative study conducted across six metros on men aged 15-35 years.
