Bangalore : Indian doctor Muhammad Haneef Monday described the ordeal he had gone through during his detention in Australia on false terror charges as death-like.
“I think it was a reminder for me of the final day – the day of death. Being in the grave. The ordeal reminded me of that death when one is alone in the graveyard,” Haneef told reporters here, recalling how he felt during the 25 days he spent in detention.
On the ordeal the family of his cousins Kafeel and Sabeel Ahmed, also from Bangalore, was going through due to their alleged involvement in the botched terror attacks in Britain last month, Haneef said he sympathised with the doctor parents – Maqbool Ahmed and Zakia Ahmed – and would extend all the support he could.
“It is the humaneness in me. I will definitely give all the emotional support to the Ahmed family. It is not their fault. It is unfortunate they have been going through what my own family has been,” Haneef noted.
He also appreciated his wife Firdous for her remarkable poise and courage she displayed throughout the traumatic period and the way she handled the situation, while he was away in Australia without any contact with her or any other family member.
