New Delhi : Supreme Court lawyers Wednesday condemned the terror bombings in the court premises of three Uttar Pradesh towns as an “attack on temples of justice”.
The lawyers organised a daylong sit-in before the apex court though they did not interfere with the normal functioning of the court.
“Friday’s terrorist attacks in Lucknow, Faizabad, and Varanasi, in which several lawyers, litigants, stamp vendors and other innocent people were killed, are a heinous crime against humanity,” said Supreme Court Bar Association president P.H. Parekh.
“Such an act is an attack on the temple of justice, an attempt to hinder with the administration of justice. We deplore and condemn it. It is also a direct attack on the independence of the bar,” Parekh added.
The apex court bar also called upon the central and state governments to “pay proper and adequate compensation rather than the meagre compensation provided”. The lawyers also asked authorities to beef up security at the Supreme Court.
“The apex court lawyers will also meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil for beefing up of the security arrangements in all court premises in the country, including the Supreme Court,” said Parekh.
Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan Monday underlined the need to speedily set up security gadgets at the apex court.
In his Law Day address, he said: “The terror attacks in Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad are an eye opener and it has become highly necessary that the Supreme Court and its premises be insulated from threats or terrorist activities.”
