Former RBI employee sentenced for disproportionate wealth

Chennai : A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court here Tuesday sentenced S.R. Baskaran, a former Reserve Bank of India employee, to five years in jail for accumulating wealth beyond known sources of income between 1988 to 1997.

He was also asked to pay a fine of Rs.2 million for the crime by Judge Naganathan.

CBI prosecutor Jacob Daniel demanded the attachment of the convict’s properties and Naganathan asked the prosecution to separately apply for this.

Following his conviction, Baskaran was lodged at the high security Puzhal prison here.

Baskaran’s wife Srikala Devi, also awarded three years’ jail term and a fine of Rs.1 million, was granted bail and accorded 20 days’ permission to appeal against the sentence.
