Arab Interim Parliament pushes for reconciliation among Palestinians

By NNN-KUNA

Cairo : The Arab Interim Parliament (AIP) asked its committee on reconciliation Saturday to activate efforts to restore unity and accord among the Palestinians.

There is a malicious design targeting the division of Palestine into two weak entities (in Gaza Strip and the West Bank) as a prelude to erasing the identity of the Palestinian people, the AIP warned in a draft resolution of the ongoing emergency session here.

The draft reaffirmed commitment to the Arab peace initiative as basis for solving the chronic Arab-Israeli conflict.

It condemned Israel’s adoption of Zionism as an official identity of the Jewish state, deeming the act as an open call for racism. It also decried the U.S. support for the move.

Meanwhile, the draft urged all Arab and Muslim countries including the Palestinian National Authority to sever ties with “the Zionist enemy” and comply fully with the Arab boycott of Israel.

The Arab parliamentarians called on international and regional legal and humanitarian agencies to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the “crimes of the Zionist entity” against the defenseless Palestinian people.

Such agencies must shoulder their responsibilities and provide support for the Palestinian people, according to the draft resolution.

The draft called for immediate release of Dr. Aziz Al-Duwaik – speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council – as well as other Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails.

Duwaik has been detained by Israel since 2006.

The AIP appreciated the stance adopted recently by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to prevent starving Palestinians in Gaza Strip, the draft pointed out.

Under Mubarak’s instructions, Egyptian border guards allowed thousands of besieged Gazans to cross the border through Rafah crossing point in order to get basic foodstuff and medical supplies.

The draft also called for breaking the siege on Gazans and doubling the humanitarian assistances to them with a view to preventing a looming catastrophe in the Palestinian territories.

The AIP deputies decided forming a fact-finding panel to probe the crimes against humanity and atrocities being committed by the Jewish state.

The results of the inquiry will be tabled to the Arab League, the United Nations and the International Criminal Court as well as other regional and international concerned organizations, according to the draft.

The AIP tasked its committee on foreign affairs and national security with working out a special dossier assessing the Palestine cause in general and outlining the Arab vision of the rights of the Palestinian people.

The draft asked the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to act to put an end to the suffering of the Palestinians and the Israeli occupation in line with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

The Arab parliamentarians, meanwhile, called on the Arab mass media to intensify their campaign to disclose the genocide being orchestrated by Israel against the defenseless people of Palestine.

The AIP emergency session, being hosted by Egypt’s People Assembly, is in line with the recommendations of the extraordinary meeting of Arab foreign ministers, held here on January 21.
