Guwahati : Four policemen were killed and two more injured Monday in an ambush by tribal separatists in Assam.
According to police, militants of the Jewel Gorlosa faction of the outlawed Dima Halam Daoga (DHD), popularly known as the Black Widow, attacked a police patrol vehicle escorting engineers of a power plant near Umrangso in North Cachar Hills district, about 290 km south of Assam’s main city of Guwahati.
“Black Widow militants laid an ambush and opened indiscriminate gunfire on the police vehicle killing four personnel on the spot and injured two more,” police official P. Kar said by telephone from Umrangso.
The militants, numbering about six to eight, fled soon after the attack.
“The police team could not retaliate with the militants attacking them from a vantage position,” the official said.
The Black Widow is a rebel group fighting for an independent homeland for the Dimasa tribe in the region.
A splinter faction of the DHD is currently operating a ceasefire with New Delhi and holding peace talks.
