Kabul : The exceptionally rough winter affecting Afghanistan since December has caused the deaths of 750 people, left thousands homeless and killed 230,000 cattle.
Dr. Barakatullah Mohammadi said there are an increasing number of victims in Herat Hospital, many in critical condition. Some 40 people were hospitalized Saturday, with more than 90 suffering frostbite.
The freezing temperatures hit rural areas hardest due to precarious housing and isolation by heavy snowfall that block the arrival of key supplies.
Ghazni Province (central), Herat (west) and Bagdhis (north) were particularly affected and the the price of food and fuel skyrocketed.
The World Food Program has been campaigning for additional aid for some two million Afghanis.
