Security Council Meets on Timor Leste

United Nations : The UN Security Council are meeting in urgent sessions Monday afternoon over Timor Leste, after the president of that country, Jose Ramos Horta, was wounded during an attack on his home in Dili.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed solidarity with the Dili government and his wishes for Horta”s prompt recovery.

UN police are in a state of alert, and coordinating with International Security Forces and Timor Leste authorities, according to the secretary general.

Reports from Dili indicate the country is in a state of emergency and under curfew.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced he will send another 200 soldiers to Timor Leste to join the UN peacekeeping forces there, as requested by that government.
