Washington : The issue of the Iraq war has been taken up again at the US Congress, where Republican legislators are trying to gain time and democrats aiming to cut funds.
An amendment submitted by the political opponents to President George W. Bush was analyzed on Tuesday at the Senate and was partially supported as a first step towards bigger debates and revisions.
House Republican leader Mitch McConnell said his fellow republicans agreed to back the initiative and took advantage of the forum to praise the alleged military progress of the Pentagon troops.
The positive Senate vote was 70 to 24 and gave the measure a green light to begin serious debates possibly on Wednesday, possibly lasting until next week.
The White House warned it will veto any plan of reducing funds that support thousands of troops deployed in that Arab nation, where nearly 4,000 US soldiers have died since 2003.
Democrats welcomed the debate but complained that republicans are trying to change the debates to other subjects like real estate crisis.
