Beijing : UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said Wednesday that China, as a permanent member of the Security Council, can play an important role in the solution of main problems affecting the world.
Ban is on an official visit in this country, and during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi he said that his purpose is to request increased partnership and participation in the solution of the most serious international issues.
Ban Ki Moon told Chinese President Hu Jintao that the UN wants to strengthen its relationship with a growing China, and he pled for a greater exchange with Beijing.
Besides meeting with top Chinese authorities, the UN General Secretary visited the University of Foreign Affairs, the new National Stadium, known as Bird’s Nest, and AIDS patients in the Ditan Hospital in Beijing.
The UN Chief arrived in China Tuesday from Japan, as part of a two-week tour that will also take him to South Korea.
This is second visit to China this year. On May 24 he visited the town of Yingxiu in the south-western county of Sichuan to express his support and solidarity to survivors of the earthquake that razed that region.
At the end of his tour, Ban is scheduled to return to Japan to attend the Summit of the Group of the Eight major industrialized nations(G-8) on July 7-9 in the island of Hokkaido.
China has participated in many projects with the United Nations ranging from peace-making efforts to the reform of UN bodies.
