Kuala Lumpur : A violent quake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale shook Indonesia’s Sumatra Island on Monday but no reports are yet available on possible casualties or losses.
The Indonesian seismology center reported the hypocenter (focus) of the quake at 34 kilometers under seabed, and said the quake caused no tsunamis.
The western shores of Sumatra were hit by a series of violent quakes since February.
The epicenter of the quake was 160 kilometers west of Painan City, west of the Sumatra region.
The Aceh Province suffered a rattling 7.5 point quake February 20, and three people were killed and some 25 others were injured.
Indonesia, a nation of 17,000 islands, is very prone to quakes due to its location atop the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet.
The Pacific region saw a whole 9 point quake December 26, 2004 which caused towering tsunami waves that caused great devastation.
