A statement from the coalition forces’ Bagram base said several insurgents were killed and eight suspects were detained during two separate operations to degrade Taliban leadership networks.

The troops conducted the search operations in Garmsir district of Helmand province to target a Taliban commander responsible for facilitating foreign fighters and weapons smuggling.

“Several insurgents were killed when they fired on coalition forces,” said the statement, adding the troops detained four individuals with suspected links to Taliban networks.

Coalition forces also recovered several weapons, ammunition vests and hand-grenades that were destroyed on-site to prevent further use by militant forces.

During a separate operation in Qalat district of Zabul province, coalition forces detained four individuals associated with a Taliban commander responsible for attacks on troops. A detainee is also associated with Taliban and foreign fighter facilitation operations, said the statement.

Separately, a Canadian soldier was killed in a roadside bomb blast in the southern province of Kandahar. The military did not give the exact date of the blast but said the soldier was killed in an explosion some 45 kilometres west of Kandahar city.

The soldier was evacuated from the scene of the blast with the help of a military helicopter, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Kandahar airfield.
