Spain for Zapatero´s Re-election

By Prensa Latina

Madrid : The leader of the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, is today moving forward to a possible re-election as president of Spain, after four years facing up constant bombing of a fierce opposition.

Zapatero, always marked as one of the youngest elements in the environment he performs, has a delicate alternative in the Sunday general elections.

The PSOE leader can continue the re-election tradition that have had his predecessors from any party in the leadership of the cabinet since 1977 or can fail, break up the chain and hand over the Moncloa to an administration standing more and more to the right.

Born in Valladolid on August 4, 1960, Rodriguez Zapatero bases his political convictions on his grandfather, Juan Rodriguez Lozano, a Republican captain executed by the nationals during the civil war in 1936.

His heritage made him to join the PSOE shortly after turning 18 years old. Later, he graduated as lawyer at the University of Leon, in which he worked as professor of Constitutional Law from 1983 to 1986.

He became the youngest lawmaker of the House of Deputies in 1986 after gaining a seat for his native province and since then he remains as an elected representative.

The new president developed a full agenda of strong social matter, consolidated his position in Europe, and kept a cold relation with the United States.

His decision of withdrawing the troops sent by Jose Maria Aznar from Iraq marked his poor relations with the White House, at the point of not holding meetings with US President George W. Bush during his four years of mandate.
