Spanish Left Condemns Colombia Attack

By Prensa Latina

Madrid : Spain´s Izquierda Unida, the third strongest political organization in Spain, condemned on Thursday the Colombian raid into Ecuador, by regarding the action as illegal and a violation of Ecuadorian sovereignty.

Francisco Perez Esteban, IU international politics coordinator, said the incursion meant Colombian President Alvaro Uribe was betting on war in the region, and an attempt to close any humanitarian exchange of prisoners.

IU demanded the Spanish government to directly condemn the aggression, show support to Quito and suspend the sale of Spanish weapons to Colombia.

Raul Reyes, second-in-command of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), and other guerrilla were killed last Saturday during a Colombian military incursion into the Ecuadorian national territory.

Perez Esteban pointed out Reyes was a political leader and an interlocutor with the governments of France, Switzerland and Venezuela for the releases of FARC hostages.

Spain should become involved and demand a humanitarian exchange as a first step for a negotiated peace, he concluded.
