United Nations, New York : Iran called on nuclear countries to remain committed to their international undertakings.
The Iranian delegation to the preparation for the 2010 nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference issued a statement Thursday stressing the importance of observing principles and goals of the conference notably nuclear disarmament.
“It is a serious concern that nuclear countries may refuse to accept political and legal commitment regarding nuclear disarmament,” read the statement.
“The international community and member states of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) are deeply concerned over new nuclear plans of certain countries,” it added.
The Iranian delegation regretted that these countries pay no attention to international concerns and continue building new facilities to modernize nuclear weapons.
“They even provide certain NPT non-signatories with necessary equipment and facilities to make nuclear weapons,” it said.
Pointing to US-Israel nuclear cooperation, the statement said measures adopted after an agreement inked by the two sides in February 2000 showed that they violated Article 1 of the Non-Proliferation Treaty and caused concern for the NPT signatories and the Mideast countries.
It added that the agreement was also a clear breach of the NPT’s Article 3 which urges signatories to carry out nuclear activities and facilities under the surveillance and inspection of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
However, nuclear facilities and arsenals of the Zionist regime are not under the IAEA surveillance, it said, adding, “They are a real threat to all countries in the region and to the international peace and security.”
The Iranian delegation further regretted that certain nuclear states are not committed to the NPT and set unilateral limits against NPT states, the developing countries in particular.
