Madrid : Spain’s National Court has handed down sentences of more than 1,000 years each to three members of a terrorist group found responsible for a 2006 bombing that left two people dead.
The tribunal also ordered the three ETA terrorists – Igor Portu, Mattin Sarasola and Mikel San Sebastian – to pay 500,000 euros ($620,000) in compensation to the family of Carlos Alonso Palate and 700,000 euros ($870,000) to that of Diego Armando Estacio.
Palate and Estacio, both immigrants from Ecuador, were buried alive under the ruins of a garage at the international airport in Madrid. The garage was destroyed when the bombers detonated a van packed with explosives Dec 30, 2006.
ETA is an acronym for Basque language words for Homeland and Freedom. The group has killed over 850 people since 1968 and has been demanding a Basque nation comprising parts of northern Spain and southern France.
