Lucknow: Senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan will be Speaker of Uttar Pradesh Assembly. The decision was taken at a meeting of party leaders held couple of hours ago, said informed sources close to SP.
Khan is 8th time MLA from Rampur. In the just concluded assembly election he won the Rampur seat on SP ticket with highest margin in entire state.
Earlier in the day, the party reportedly decided to make SP’s youth icon Akhilesh Yadav as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. On Thursday, elected MLAs of the party had unanimously selected party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for CM’s post. But it is said he is not ready to take the job citing his falling health. Mulayam reportedly also met Khan to discuss issues related to the new government.
SP has won the UP election with thumping majority (224 seats in 403-seat house) defeating BSP of Mayawati.
