Tehran : Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on Sunday extended sympathy of the Iranian government and nation to the Bangladeshi people on the recent flood which killed hundreds of people and rendered millions of others homeless.
The Iranian minister also voiced Tehran’s readiness to assist Bangladeshi people who have been affected by the killer flood.
Mottaki made the remark during a telephone conversation with the Bangladeshi State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Foreign Ministry information and press department announced Sunday.
Issues of mutual interest, including expansion of bilateral relations and execution of joint projects particularly oil projects were among issues discussed by the two ministers.
According to reports, the confirmed death toll in the floods, which affected districts across more than half the country, rose to 678 until Friday, and was likely to go up as people return to their devastated homes.
The floods have also displaced or made homeless around seven million Bangladeshis, washed away rice and other crops on around 700,000 hectares of land, and destroyed hundreds of kilometers of roads, according to preliminary official estimates.
