Bujumbura : Insurgents of the Palipehutu Party for the Liberation of the Hutu People-National Liberation Front and the government of Burundi signed a ceasefire to be in force as of Tuesday.
The pact was mediated by the African Union, the European Union, the UN and representatives of Tanzania and Uganda, which are the countries on the presidential and the vice presidential posts of the Regional Peace Initiative for Burundi.
As of today, the irregulars will assemble in several points, where they will be looked after until they reintegrate into society, a communique provided to the press said.
This joint declaration comes a week after the mediation of the Joint Verification and Monitoring Mechanism was resumed.
The JVMM start working on September 7, 2006 and will remain active to solve pending issues, including demobilization, disarmament and reinsertion of irregulars.
Another key point is the political future of Palipehutu-NLF and its leaders, including Agathon Rwasa, who remains in exile in Tanzania.
The latest clash between government and insurgent forces occurred in Bujumburu in April, when at least 110 people from both parties were killed.
