Addis Abeba : The Ethiopian Supreme Court sentenced the death penalty to ex president Mengistu Haile Mariam, who has lived in exile in Zimbabwe since 1991.
The judicial authority modified its first sentence in which Mariam had been condemned to life imprisonment with hundreds of other officials.
According to the sentence the court considered the ex Head of State responsible for the death of about 2,000 people and about 3,000 tortured.
Mengistu Haile Mariam assumed the country’s leadership in 1974 after defeating Emperor Haile Selassie dictatorship.
In 1991 his government was defeated by the Ethiopian People Revolutionary Front, still in power today.
