Ganguly takes joint first place in Sydney Open chess

New Delhi : National champion Surya Sekhar Ganguly has just returned with a shared first place and a second place in two tournament appearances in Australia.

Ganguly, who has been the Indian national champion for the past five years in a row, won the 2008 Sydney International Open Chess Tournament, which ended last week at the Parramatta Town Hall.

Before that he finished in a tie for second at the Doeberl Cup, also in Sydney. The two events were scheduled close to each other to facilitate foreign players’ travel.

At the Sydney International, Ganguly drew his last round with Gagunashvili to finish with seven points, the same as GM Zhong Zhang of Singapore, GM Gawain Jones of Britain and IM Zong-Yuan Zhao of Australia.

Earlier, he finished second in the Doeberl Cup, which was won by American GM Varuzhan Akobian with 7.5 points from nine rounds with Ganguly and six others, Zhang Zhong, Gawain Jones, Merab Gagunashvili, GM Antic Dejan, IM Solomon Stephen and IM Kizov Atanas bunched at 6.5 points each.
