Dharmendra draws flak from Bikaner voters

Bikaner : People of Bikaner, Rajasthan, are angry with their representative in parliament. Bollywood star Dharmendra, whom they elected to parliament on the Bharatiya Janata Party ticket in 2004, has not visited the constituency even once, they say.

Savdhan, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), issued a warning to the veteran actor that it would be forced to bestow Sarveshtra Jhootha Sansad (Most untruthful MP) award on Dharmendra if he fails to come to Bikaner.

The voters are visibly agitated over the non-execution of several promises Dharmendra made ahead of his 2004 election to the Lok Sabha. The organisation earlier had threatened to boycott films of the veteran actor.

Dinesh Singh Bhadoria, state president of Savdhan, in a letter addressed to Dharmendra Thursday said the actor has not kept even a single promise he made during the election campaign.

“He has even failed to fully utilise the first instalment of his MP (local areas development) funds. The second instalment has also not been utilised”, Bhadoria added.

“We request you to visit Bikaner soon. Listen to the grievances of local residents. Otherwise, we would generate public opinion and declare you as the most untruthful MP,” he added.

“The film actor might have kept his promises with Basanti (Hema Malini) but he has failed to live up to the expectations of the people of his constituency,” Prem Singh, a local resident of the walled city area, said.

“He was ready to jump to death for Basanti in a film but when it comes to students and people of Bikaner, he turns his dead ear to them despite the fact that we are the people who voted for him,” Kailash Sharma, a college student, said.

This is not for the first time that Dharmendra is facing the wrath of Bikaner voters. During the elections of Bikaner municipal council in 2004, the voters demanded his party colleagues bring the star-turned politician to Bikaner if they wanted votes. They even coined a slogan, “Dharmendra Lao, Vote Ley Jao” (Bring Dharmendra, Get Votes).
