New Delhi: Muslims are in one of the most difficult phases of their history when malicious attacks including allegations of terrorism are being made on Islam and Muslims all over, said Governor of Haryana Akhlaqur Rahman Kidwai today.
Addressing a conference organized by Imarat Shariah (Bihar, Jharkhand & Orissa) at Jamia Millia Islamia, at the end of its weeklong social reform campaign in the national capital, Governor A R Kidwai said in this difficult situation when the image of Islam and Muslims are being tarnished, Imarat Shariah has a role to play. He said Imarat should come forward and clean and rebuild the tarnished image of the Muslims. He said the malicious campaign against Muslims is politically motivated. He also recalled his attachment with Imarat since 1979, particularly during his 11-year stay in Bihar as governor.

On Muslim education, he lamented that the community which laid foundation of education and scientific research in Europe, is lagging behind all other communities in the field of education today. He called on Muslims to lead the world in education, science and medicine as this will help in image building. Religious education should be made compulsory to the extent that every Muslim child could read Quran and comprehend but all the same the community must push their children to all modern fields of learning, he said.
Syed Hamid, chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, said Imarat should set up information centre in every district as the lack of information about government schemes has played a big role in Muslim backwardness. The Sachar Committee Report, he said, has blown out the minority appeasement balloon as it exposed where Muslims stand in educational, social and economic fields. The community should focus on education, health and social reform, the veteran educationist said. He emphasized on communal harmony, asking the community to strengthen it as it is crucial for successful implementation of government schemes meant for minorities. This because the overwhelming majority of the executive is from majority community, and so to forge good relations with the officials is key to progress, he argued. In his presidential address, Maulana Syed Nizamuddin, Ameer-e-Shariat and general secretary of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), said the Imarat has led the community on all issues in the last eight decades. Imarat Shariah was established in 1921. Muslims are an advancing community, and so they should rise against atrocities and social evils, Ameer-e-Shariat said. Muslims should guide the world in every field of life with Quran, he continued. Elaborating on the activities of Imarat, he said five technical institutes and a couple of hospitals are being run by the organization. Imarat is focusing on these two areas because it thinks that control on education is necessary to win mind and health services to win heart, he said.
