Thiruvananthapuram : A seven-member Supreme Court-appointed team Monday began taking stock of the contents of four of the six chambers of the famed Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple situated in the heart of the capital.
The chambers are the property of the temple and reportedly contain rare, precious gems and jewellery.
Of the six chambers, two have not been opened for ages. The stock-taking process was ordered by the Supreme Court following a petition by advocate T.P. Sundararajan.
These chambers are kept under huge security near the famed temple which is maintained by the erstwhile royal family of Travancore, the Maharaja of the erstwhile princely state of Travancore.
“We expect to complete the stock-taking process of four chambers by Friday,” said retired judge M.N. Krishnan, who lead the seven-member team, which also includes the petitioner.
The team would present its findings to the Supreme Court.
The main temple deity, Padmanabhaswamy, is a form of Vishnu in Anananthasayanam posture (in eternal sleep of yognidra) and the city of Thiruvananthapuram derives its name from the name of the presiding deity enshrined in the temple.
