Welfare homes themselves violate child rights: Agnivesh

By IANS,

New Delhi : The institutions responsible for the welfare of children themselves violate child rights, activist Swami Agnivesh said Monday, referring to the alleged abuse of inmates in an orphanage here.

“The orphans sent to different institutions become more vulnerable because of poor monitoring of these institutions,” he said at a press conference organised by NGOs working for children.

“The institutions which are wholly responsible for the child care are themselves found in violation of child rights,” he said, expressing dismay over the spurt of complaints of violations of child rights.

The NGOs also demanded a protocol response and protection of children.

Police have arrested four people for alleged sexual abuse of children at privately-run Arya orphanage in central Delhi. The state government Monday ordered an inquiry into the alleged sexual assault at the orphanage.
