New Delhi: Bihar, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh registered doubled the number of communal incidents this year compared to last year. The data was released on Wednesday by Minister of State Home Affairs R.P.N. Singh replying to a question in Rajya Sabha.
Minister informed the Parliament that Central Government doen’t maintain list of people displaced as a result of communal violence.
There were a total of 668 communal incidents in 2012, in which 94 people were killed and 2117 injured. In 2013 for data till October, number of incidents has jumped to 725 and number of people killed showed an increase of 50% with 143 killed and 1978 injured.
States that show an increase in communal violence from last year are Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. Among these only Rajasthan registered fewer killed this year as compared to last year otherwise it’s a significant increase in number of people killed in communal violence in the four states.
Curiously enough, data table records zero for communal violence in Assam even though the state showed brutal anti-Muslim violence in 2012.
Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal, Maharashtra, & Kerala showed significant decrease in the number of communal incidents in these states.
