New Delhi: The Welfare Party of India has asked the Gujarat government under Narendra Modi to “desist from punitive and retributory actions” against civil and human rights activist Teesta Setalvad in the form of an FIR filed at Ahmedabad police station.

Terming the action against her as “shameful,” a statement by WPI President Mujtaba Farooq, said, “This is the continuation of what has been happening in Gujarat after the 2002 mass massacre of thousands of innocents. Victims and those who came forward for their help alike have been being intimidated through threats, false cases, warnings etc and the Apex Court had to intervene to ensure impartial inquiry and transfer cases outside the state for speedy and judicious trial.”

He further added, “The Gujarat government not only miserably failed in healing the wounds, but is putting salt by these kinds of measures of obstructing the victims from justice and reparation.”

FIR against Teesta Setalvad is nothing, but a punishment for the fight for justice to Zakia Jaffri, wife of Ehsan Jaffri, former Member of Parliament and over 200 Muslims who were killed in Gulbarg society, Narada Patiya, the WPI President added.

“The timing of the FIR speaks a lot as Zakia Jaffri is making preparations for filing an appeal against the ruling of a lower court that has favouring SIT’s clean chit to Narendra Modi. This fascist act should be withdrawn immediately,” Farooq said.
