Gagging of Dr. Fahieem Beg is an insult to the Muslim community: Dr. Zafar Mahmood

New Delhi: Earlier today, a local doctor from Delhi’s North-East district Dr Faheem Beg was ushered out of the Vigyan Bhavan after he stood up and told the Prime Minister that instead of starting new schemes, UPA government should first implement earlier programmes on the ground. Both the PM and UPA Chairperson were at the Vigyan Bhavan to inaugurate the National Waqf Development Corporation (NAWADCO).

Dr. Beg was soon gagged by policemen and forcibly taken out of the auditorium.

Presient of Zakat Foundation, Dr. Syed Zafar Mahmood has reacted strongly to this episode and said that gagging of Dr. Beg is an insult to the Muslim community. “We strongly condemn this anti-Muslim aggression of the Govt and we consider this as an insult of the Muslim community of India,” he said in a statement to TCN.

Dr. Mahmood who was the OSD to the Sachar Committee welcomed the establishment of National Waqf Development Corporation. He termed it as “a good step for enhancing the waqf revenue and Mr K Rahman Khan deserves praise. “

But he questioned timing of the announcement,” it is not understood why the Central Govt took seven long years in implementing this simple recommendation of Sachar Committee. Apart from this and the recent amendment of Waqf law, the Govt has not implemented any other important recommendation of Sachar Committee which is likely to have far reaching positive impact for amelioration of the low status of Muslims in every field.Like, de-reservation of parliamentary and assembly constituencies which have high Muslim percentages but low SC visibility. Instead, as per Sachar report, those constituencies should be reserved which have high SC percentage and low Muslim presence. No action has been taken by the Govt on this recommendation in seven years.”

Dr. Mahmood also took the government to task for not instituting Alternative Admission Criteria in colleges & universities. According to Sachar the critieria should be 60% based on academic merit and 40% on backwardness.
