Ara (Bihar): The investigation team of Bihar police has confirmed the bomb blast at Ara civil court premises that killed at least two persons and left 16 others injured on Friday was aimed at freeing the mastermind of six year old bomb blast accused during his appearance in the court.

At least two persons, including a middle-aged woman and a 26-year-old police constable Amit Kumar, were killed and 16 others injured when a powerful crude bomb exploded on the Ara civil court premises in Bihar on Friday. Kumar had recently got married.

According to police officials, the explosion took place when a van brought 37 inmates to the court. A grievously injured constable, Amit Kumar from Shahpur of Bhojpur, succumbed to his injuries. Some others who were critical injured referred to the Patna Medical College and Hospital [PMCH].

However, police officials clarified that the blast was not a “terrorist or extremist” activity. “It was set off to free a hardened criminal Lambu Sharma,” Gupteshwar Pandey, Additional Director General of Police [headquarters], told one of a media person.

Taking advantage of the explosion, two prisoners – one of them convict, managed to escape from police custody. The prisoners, Lambu Sharma and Akhilesh Upadhayay, were involved in several cases of murder and dacoity.

Police officials have also confirmed that Sharma was the main accused in 2009 bomb blast that had happened at the same Ara court premises resulting into deaths of two persons. “Lambu Sharma is wanted in several cases of murder, dacoity and extortion. He is also an accused in the Ara court blast in July 2009,” said Mr. Pandey.

Incidentally, despite revelation of association of the escaped prisoner to be an accused in 6 years old bomb blast that killed two persons, the police and media has immediately ruled out the possibility of linking the blast with any saffron organization terming the incidence to be criminal in nature than terror.

Meanwhile, the investigation team has established the identity of the female bomber. She has been identified as a native of Uttar Pradesh.

“The woman has been identified as Reena Gaudh hailing from Balia in Uttar Pradesh,” Superintendent of Police of Bhojpur Akhtar Hussain said.

The SP said it had come to light that the woman was carrying bomb in her purse to help Lambu Sharma, who was recently awarded life sentence in a case.

Bhojpur district Magistrate Pankaj Pal said it was not a terror attack but a criminal one aiming to free two prisoners. He also denied that the woman was a suicide bomber saying, “It was a coincidence that the bomb exploded when she was trying to adjust it”.
