Indian equities open on a positive note

Mumbai : Indian equities opened higher Wednesday on the back of some strong cues from Asian peers, with shares of private banks, power and metal companies figuring among the gainers and technology stocks turning weak.

The 30-share benchmark sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened up 209 points at 16,816.94 points, while the broader Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) opened 63 points higher at 4836.55 points.

Some 45 minutes into trading, the Sensex was up 448.65 points at 17,056.66 points, while Nifty was trading at 4,969.30.

Among the major frontline gainers were Reliance Industries, Oil and Natural Gas Corp, ICICI Bank, Reliance Power, Idea Cellular, NTPC, Cairn, Tata Communication, HDFC Bank, Tata Steel, Sterlite, SAIL, Reliance Communications.

The top losers among technology stocks included Satyam, Infosys and Wipro.

Asian markets were trading mixed. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 2 percent, Japan’s Nikkei rose 1.39 percent and the Taiwan Weighted advanced 0.75 percent, while Singapore’s Straits Times and South Korea’s Seoul Composite were lower.

US stocks had ended on a mixed note Tuesday, with the Dow up 133 points but Nasdaq closing flat.
