Rs 6.50 crore approved for rehabilitation of Behrampada fire victims

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government at last has approved Rs 6.50 crore for the rehabilitation of Behrampada fire victims. This has followed the assurance and then re-assurance from the chief minister Ashok Chavan to the victims that their rehabilitation will be at the same place where their houses were before the fire.

Muhammad Husain, a local corporator told TCN on phone, ‘Today, the local MP Priya Datt and Kirpa Shankar Das inaugurated the scheme and work in this regard is expected to start if not today then tomorrow. ‘

According to the reports, every one will be provided with a ground plus one pucca floor house with maximum height of 16 ft. The Bandra Relief Committee workers reportedly told that the government plans to rehabilitate the whole Behrampada slum but right now the houses burnt in the fire will be on priority list.

Earlier, talking to TCN Chhote Bhai, a fire victim sitting under plastic sheet where once his house was, told that he had heard there was to be constructed bigger rooms than the chawls and he was afraid of being deprived of the room as he did not possess much money.
