Beant Singh's widow dead

Chandigarh : Jaswant Kaur, widow of slain Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, died following cardiac arrest at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here Monday. She was 85.

According to PGIMER officials, Kaur was brought to the hospital at around 3 p.m. Monday.

"Jaswant Kaur was admitted here in the afternoon and she died of cardiac arrest," said a PGIMER doctor, requesting not to be named.

Kaur, who was given a cabinet minister status, was allotted a government bungalow in the upscale Sector 5 here. She was provided with Z-plus security cover for her life time.

Her daughter Gurkanwal Kaur is a former minister of state for social welfare, and son Tej Parkash Singh is a former Punjab state transport minister.

Kaur's husband Beant Singh was assassinated Aug 31, 1995, by a suicide bomber here. He was credited with ending terrorism in Punjab and of ushering in an era of peace and prosperity in state.

Her grandson Ravneet Singh Bittu is Member of Parliament from Anandpur Sahib constituency in Punjab.
