New Delhi : Next time the postman rings the bell, he might have more than mail to deliver. Under an arrangement with Delhi Police, he will also deliver traffic violation memos and collect fines.

Police have roped in the services of over 3,000 postmen of 439 post offices including 12 head post offices to make the traffic prosecution more effective and "friendly". The violators can also deposit fines in the select head post offices.

"We have authorised postmen to collect the compounding amount at the doorstep of the traffic violators. The postman will issue a proper receipt on account of amount realised by him," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Qamar Ahmed.

"The violator has to pay normal money-order commission on the compounding amount and an additional amount of Rs.5 as service charges for providing collection facility at doorstep," he said.

Ahmed admitted that the initiative was taken to minimise inconvenience caused to the general public in submitting the traffic violation fine to the concerned authority.

"The new initiative will not only benefit police, which issue at least 12,000 traffic violations challans every day, and violators but will also give a chance to the postman to earn some extra bucks," Ahmed added.

Besides launching the 'postman service', Ahmed said traffic police have also introduced a new technology on the city roads, where violations will be recorded without physical stopping of the vehicle.

"The new system is free from causing traffic snarls and chaotic situations. It is hassle-free as there is no interaction between the traffic law violator and the traffic police official, who are recording the violations," he informed.
