Kolkata : Tortured by her in-laws for giving birth to a girl, a woman pushed her four-and-half-year-old daughter off the Howrah bridge here Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred at around 7.30 p.m., police said. Anita Singh, 35, a resident of Labhpur in Howrah, came to the bridge with her two sons and a daughter. She pushed her daughter off the bridge and was trying to push her younger son as well when onlookers caught her.
Anita said she had tried to kill her children and commit suicide as she was regularly tortured by her in-laws for giving birth to a daughter. Her husband, Rajnath Singh, a bank employee, has been detained for questioning.
Police have sought the help of divers to trace the girl. The River Traffic Police and Howrah police have joined in the search operation.
