Palestinian negotiator asks US to help in talks with Israel

Ramallah, Aug 2 (Xinhua) Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said here Thursday Palestine wants US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to help in resuming final status talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

“We have had enough peace initiatives, and we don’t want more. All we want from Rice is to help implement these initiatives,” said Erekat. “We look for a common Arab stance in case the Arabs join any world peace conference.”

The two goals Palestine Authority is seeking to achieve are a fruitful international Middle East conference that US President George W Bush has proposed and resumption of talks with Israel on final status, the Palestinian leader said.

Rice, who arrived in Ramallah earlier in the day, met Prime Minister Salam Fayyad of the Palestinian caretaker government and President Mahmoud Abbas.

In the presence of President Abbas, Fayyad and Rice clinched an agreement worth $80 million to support Palestinian security sector reform.
