Shimla monkeys to sport earrings!

Shimla, Aug 2 (IANS) Monkeys here will soon be flaunting earrings as part of a drive by the wildlife department to identify the simians and avoid recapturing them for sterilisation.

Nagesh Guleria, Shimla district forest officer (wildlife), said: “We are considering putting earrings on sterilised monkeys. Some 1,600 monkeys here have been sterilised in the past six months.”

Monkey catchers often end up recapturing monkeys that have already been sterilised because it is difficult to tell them from the rest.

Currently, collar bands and colours are being used. But collar bands often break and a painted monkey often goes back to its original colour after a shower. Wildlife officials hope earrings will last longer.

Officials say the sterilisation programme is the first of its kind in the country and is funded by the central government.
