New Delhi : A Communist Party of India (Marxist) Member of Parliament has demanded immediate implementation of the recommendations of Justice Srikrishna Commission Report on the 1992-93 communal riots that erupted in the backdrop of Babri Masjid demolition.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Lok Sabha Member Hannan Mulla has urged the government to award due punishment to the culprits of these riots.

“In the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts cases the Special TADA Court has done justice to the hundreds of innocent persons whose dead bodies had littered the roads of the city by awarding capital and jail sentences for the culprits. But the culprits of the anti-Muslim riots, in reaction of which Mumbai witnessed serial blasts, are roaming freely even today without any fear that the long arms of law will ever catch hold of their necks,” rues Mr Mulla.

He said that Justice Srikrishna Commission Report confirms the cause-and-effect relation between the post Babri demolition anti-Muslim riots and the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

Mr Mulla has mentioned in his above mentioned letter the Srikrishna Commission finding that Shiv Sena activists had played a leading role in organising the attacks on Muslims and their properties since 8th January 1993, and they had total backing right from their shakha pramukh to the party supremo Bal Thackeray. Like an active army general Bal Thackeray had prepared his committed Shiv Sainiks for attacks on Muslims.

He added that Srikrishna Report has mentioned the names of some police officials who actively participated in the killing of Muslims and helped Sena and other activists in the killing of Muslims.

“How unfortunate it is that the Congress-led government of Maharashtra promoted 10 such erring police officials instead of punishing them,” he wondered.

Nine years have passed since Justice Srikrishna submitted his Report but no action has been taken against the culprits named in the Report while Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had pledged that no culprit would be spared, Mr Mulla added.

“If no action is taken to implement the recommendations of Srikrishna Report in letter and spirit, it would not only send very wrong signals to the minority community but also hurt the sentiments of right-thinking citizens of the country,” he continued.

Mr Mulla urged the Prime Minister to adopt correct stand against the various anti-Muslim communal riots in the same way as the government took action against those responsible for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
