New Delhi : India’s Jai Bhagwan Stormed into the semi-finals of the 60-kg category Monday to be assured of at least a bronze medal in the Xinjian boxing championships in China, according to reports reaching here.
In the quarterfinals, Jai Bhagwan defeated Vladimir Saruhanian of Russia 37-30 in a hard-hitting bout. Using his height advantage, the Indian kept his opponent off balance with clean straight punches right through and now faces an Italian boxer in the semi-finals, said a Indian Amateur Boxing Federation press release.
Jai Bhagwan had earlier beaten Nuerbayi (one name) of China 38-26 in the pre-quarter-finals.
Other Indians did not enjoy such success as Jitender Kumar was beaten 22-29 by Dang Yong China in the 51-kg class and Diwakar Prasad lost 17-18 to Sarwut Prapaipetch of Thailand in the 57-kg contest.
The remaining Indian boxers – Sanjay Kolte (48-kg), Manoj (64-kg), Dilbagh Singh (69-kg) and Dinesh Kumar (81-kg) – will be in action in the ring over the next two days.
