Drug production in Afghanistan is worrying – Official

Tehran : Iran’s substitute secretary-general of Drug Control Headquarter, by expressing concern over drug production in Afghanistan, said the amount of drug production in the year 2007 in Afghanistan would be over 7,000 tons.

After meeting with Afghan’s parliamentary delegation here on Saturday, Mohammad-Reza Jahani told reporters, ” According to the UN Drug Control Office report, in the year of 2006, over 6,100 tons of narcotics were smuggled from Afghanistan to other countries and it is predicted that the amount will increase in 2007.

Expressing concern about increasing cultivation of poppy in Afghanistan, Jahani said following the US forces presence in the country, production of poppy has increased twice or three times.

He said, “West campaign against reduction of poppy cultivation is not serious in Afghanistan, and after US forces presence in that country we witness the increasing amount of poppy production.”

The official continued, “Iran, in its fight against drugs, have lost 3,500 persons and 12,000 people have been disabled, while NATO has spent only 15 million dollars in its campaign.”
