A government spokesman said Amarjit Debbarma, a sub-divisional police officer, was found guilty of violating norms while interrogating Kamal Acharjee, a government employee.

Acharjee was arrested on charges of murdering Communist Party of India – Marxist leader Haricharan Tripura last week.

“After an inquiry and scrutiny of a medical report, the home department suspended Debbarma for committing third-degree torture on a government employee,” the official said.

The incident took place in the Manu Bazar police station, 135 km south of here.

“The police official pierced pins in my nail and thrust chilli powder inside my anus and penis, besides the nose. Then he beat me for the whole night using a thorny branch,” Acharjee told journalists at a hospital.

“Unable to bear the torture, I fainted and was brought to hospital for treatment.”

Police superintendent of South Tripura district, K.V. Sreejesh, visited the police station last week and probed the matter before sending his report to the police chief, seeking action.

Police have also arrested Narendra Narayan Choudhury, another suspect in the murder case. Choudhury is a brother of the tribal welfare minister Jitendra Choudhury.
