India is fifth largest steel producer: committee

New Delhi : India is the world’s fifth largest crude steel producer according to an expert committee set up by the steel ministry, an official statement said Tuesday.

India produced 49.45 million tones of crude steel in 2006 as against 44 million tones according to revised data by the committee. The revised figure for crude steel production in 2006-07 is pegged at 50.71 million tonnes and that of finished steel at 51.90 million tonnes.

“India has moved up two places in global ranking to fifth place in production of crude steel. An expert committee set up by the ministry of steel, which went into the issue of under reporting of capacity and production data, has revised the production figures for crude steel in calendar year 2006 to 49.45 million tonnes as against 44 million tonnes in the pre-revised data,” the ministry said in a release.

The committee, formed by the ministry in December 2006, consists of members from the industry and academicians.
